I don’t know what it is about my answer, but Dash sits quietly watching me. He holds the book in his lap and runs his fingers over the cover, analyzing. Neither of us says anything for the rest of the drive and I can’t help but feel self-conscious.

Finally, in the midst of the tropical trees and forest, we come to a farm area. We stop at a large building and what appears to be some type of stable. I look inquisitively at Jo and she smiles back before jumping out and running into what must be the office. Next thing I know, we’re each being directed toward horses.

She smiles at me emphatically when she tells me about how she used to ride them all the time as a young girl. Before she lived in Puntarenas, she lived with her family farther north where they worked at a tourist horseback riding place similar to this one.

She was young, but they let her go on the rides often until she was old enough to lead the tours herself. As she swings her leg swiftly so she’s sitting up on her horse, I can see the ease of it all coming right back to her. “Five years off a horse and I’ve still got it,” she beams at me before backing her horse right up beside mine.

Luc looks like he’s freaking out a little and Violetta is trying to reassure him. Dash, of course, looks perfectly comfortable as he directs his horse to my other side after helping Violetta calm Luc. “He’s never ridden before and his fear is spooking the horse,” Dash turns to tell me. “You, on the other hand, look like a natural. She seems to like you,” he says, gesturing to my horse.

She’s beautiful. The front of her body is a deep rich brown and her backside is all white with what looks like paint splattered brown near her stomach. A few large paint spills of brown mark her hind legs, and a white streak traces down her face.

I shrug, “I don’t know, I just like animals.” He smiles at me. “You look pretty comfortable yourself. You got a story like Jo?” I inquire.

He looks bothered for some reason by my question or whatever memories it stirs. “Umm no. Our stories are quite different. Before my mom passed and when my dad was around we had a decent amount of money, so we got to do a lot of the typical tourist things.” He hesitates for a moment, “This was always one of my parents’ favorites.” I didn’t realize he spoke of his mom in past tense because she’d passed away, I just assumed it was because they hadn’t been together for a while. And he hasn’t mentioned his dad before, yet he mentions him now with longing.

I turn when I hear Jo click toward her horse, directing it behind our guide who has appeared. Our conversation takes a lull for a little while as the guide gives us a history of the land and leads us into the lush forest.
